When your brace is fitted it will take a little time to get used to it. As the teeth begin to move they may ache. Tightness and pressure are to be expected, this is merely a sign that your teeth are moving and your brace is doing its job. Normal painkillers should be taken and this discomfort will ease after few days.

The brace may rub and annoy the inside of your mouth. Everyone is given orthodontic wax; this will become your new best friend….simply tear a bit off, soften it between your fingers and stick it onto the offending bracket. If you’re out of wax sugar free Chewing gum can be a good alternative.

Tooth brushing and good dental hygiene are essential. Tooth brushing should be 3 times a day for 3 minutes each time. We advise all our patients to purchase an orthodontic brace pack. Special orthodontic toothbrushes are for sale in the practice that will enable you to clean properly around the brackets and under the wires.

A fluoride mouthwash should also be used for 1 minute once per day separate to tooth brushing.

There can still be the assumption that wearing braces confines you to a liquid diet! This however is not the case and nearly everything can still be eaten with care. Hard or chewy sweets should be totally avoided. Hard healthy foods such as apples and carrots should be cut down into smaller sections as these can break the brace. Sugary snacks and sugary/acidic drinks should be totally avoided between meals.

Sometimes a bracket may come away from a tooth or a wire may pop out or be broken. As long as it is not causing pain or trauma it is not an emergency and it will be fine until your next appointment. In this case it is fine to slide the bracket off and trim the wire back to the next tooth. Nail clippers will cut through the wires that we use at the very start of treatment.

Use wax as described above if any part of the brace appears to be poking into you. If you’re in bother, simply call us, we will be happy to advise or if needs be arrange to see you.

If you have a genuine emergency during the weekend or holidays there is an emergency number you can call.
